TALK 03
Governing AI in your business
AI is already at work in most businesses, and the rules that will govern it are being written now. Few organisations have decided who is responsible for it.
WHAT THE AUDIENCE LEAVES WITH
01The practical decisions that make up AI governance, and who in the business should own each one
02What to check in contracts with AI suppliers, and in your own staff policies
03Where AI regulation is heading, and how to prepare before the rules are final
AI rarely arrives in a business by decision of the board. A team starts using a drafting tool, a supplier adds AI to software the company already pays for, someone builds a workflow on a free account. Within a year it is in more places than the leadership team knows, handling customer data, shaping decisions and producing work that goes out under the company's name. Meanwhile the rules for AI and data are being redrawn in the UK, in the EU and sector by sector, so the ground is shifting beneath a practice that was never formally adopted.
Good AI governance is less a grand framework than a handful of practical decisions. Where AI may and may not be used, and who approves a new use. What data it can see. Which outputs a person must check before they leave the business. What the contracts with AI suppliers say about data, liability and audit. And how the business records what it decided and why, so that it can explain itself to a client, an insurer or a regulator.
The talk works through each of these decisions, with the questions a board should be asking and the answers that should give it pause. It covers accountability when AI gets something wrong, which never rests with the software, and staff policies that people actually follow. It also looks ahead, reading where AI regulation is heading before it is final, so that a business can build towards the rules rather than retrofit itself to them.
Dr Jackie Nagtegaal is a lawyer and the founder of a regulated law firm built around AI tools, where she leads information governance and holds one of the compliance roles the regulator requires. She speaks from running AI governance day to day as well as advising on it.

Every year brings a new wave of trends, and most pass. How to tell the ones that will reshape your market from the ones that will be forgotten.
I speak on other subjects and prepare talks to fit the event, its audience and its theme. Tell me what you are planning.
